It emerged as a subdivision of the Principality of Anhalt from 1252 until 1396, when it was divided into the principalities of Anhalt-Dessau and Anhalt-Köthen.

Sophie Auguste of Anhalt-Zerbst (9 March 1663 – 14 September 1694), was a German noblewoman member of the House of Ascania and by marriage Duchess of Saxe-Weimar. Born in Zerbst , she was the eleventh of fourteen children born from the marriage of John VI, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst and Sophie Augusta of Holstein-Gottorp .
She was a daughter of Frederick III, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp and Duchess Marie Elisabeth of Saxony. On 16 September 1649 in Gottorp, she married John VI, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst. After her husband died in 1667, she became regent for her minor son Charles William, until he came of age in 1674.
Frederick Augustus succeeded his father in Anhalt-Zerbst in 1747, at the age of thirteen. His mother, the Princess Johanna Elisabeth, acted as regent on his behalf until 1752. He was one of the sovereigns who supported Britain in the American Revolutionary War with soldiers. For this, he received a substantial monetary compensation.
Elisabeth war eine Tochter des Fürsten Joachim Ernst von Anhalt (1536–1585) aus dessen erster Ehe mit Agnes (1540–1569), Tochter des Grafen Wolfgang I. von Barby . Elisabeth wurde am 6. Oktober 1577 im Jagdschloss Letzlingen die dritte Ehefrau des fast 40 Jahre älteren Kurfürsten Johann Georg von Brandenburg (1525–1598).
