Johann Adolf was the youngest son of Frederick II, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and Magdalene Augusta of Anhalt-Zerbst. The prince was educated by Gottfried Christoph Sommer in Gotha and between 1735 and 1739 in Geneva. [1] He joined the Danish military service in 1739.

Their eldest son Frederick was the first to inherit this title. His granddaughter from this son, Anna Sophie of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, was a direct matrilineal ancestor of Nicholas II of Russia. Frederick I, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. When Ernst inherited the duchy of Saxe-Altenburg (1672), he made Frederick the regent of that duchy. In 1674 Ernst, who was already ill, made Frederick the regent of his entire lands. After the death of his father (1675) Frederick assumed the throne of both duchies.
He was the fourth but third surviving son of Ernst Ludwig I, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen and his first wife, Dorothea Marie of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. Karl Friedrich inherited the duchy of Saxe-Meiningen when his father died in 1724, along with his older brother, Ernst Ludwig II , under the guardianship of his uncles Frederick Wilhelm and Anton Ulrich until 1733.
