A 16th-century quillon dagger. Forward-facing quillons are typical of left-handed daggers. More specialized daggers developed with the increase in dueling combats through the 16th century. This was fed, in turn, by an increasing number of fencing schools and all manner of fighting styles and opinions on weapons.
16 th – 17 th Century German Inscribed Left Handed Dagger. The hilt is in good condition, comprising of a rounded pommel an original leather grip and a set of slightly curved quillons and thumb / side ring. The blade is a double edge with single fuller on either side, the inscription which is quiet an unusal thing to fin.
From about 1525 to about 1625, the rapier was worn regularly in tandem with a parrying dagger. They were sometimes made and decorated as a set. By the mid-seventeenth century, however, parrying with the rapier blade alone had become the preferred style as a result of the development of refined fencing techniques and lighter, smaller rapiers.
