When Surf's Up was released in 1971, it got the best all-round reviews of The Beach Boys' career. Some 35 years later, it feels a whole lot more problematic to me. Yes, there's no denying it's a damn fine record: more ambitious and more adult than Sunflower, more in tune with its times.
