In San Diego, interest grew in acquiring Midway as a floating museum. Once an agreement had been reached in September 2003, the carrier was towed to San Diego, making a brief stop in Oakland for a fresh coat of paint. Midway arrived at her permanent berth on January 10, 2004, and the museum opened on June 7 that year.
