A leap year has a total of 366 days instead of the usual 365 as a result of adding an extra day (February 29) to the Gregorian Calendar which is the calendar currently used by most modern societies. This calendar was introduced in 1582, to replace the flawed Julian Calendar.

Over time, these extra 44+ minutes would also cause the seasons to drift in our calendar. For this reason, not every four years is a leap year. The rule is that if the year is divisible by 100 and not divisible by 400, leap year is skipped.

In an ordinary year, if you were to count all the days in a calendar from January to December, you’d count 365 days. But approximately every four years, February has 29 days instead of 28.
