Johan de Witt besuchte die Beeckman-Schule in Dordrecht und studierte ab 1641 Jura an der Universität Leiden.Er reiste gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder Cornelis im Jahr 1645 durch Europa, nach Frankreich, Italien, die Schweiz und England.

On the back is written: “These are the corpses of Jan and Cornelis de Witt, painted from life by an important painter, as they were hanging from the gallows at 11 o’clock in the evening.
Jun 2019 • Solo. This statue is erected at the place where Johan de Witt along with his brother Cornelius was killed by a mob instigated by William III of Orange. After the killing their bodies were literally slaughtered. Noses, ears, tongues, toes were sold as trophies, while their hearts were cut out and exhibited.
