  5. 31 de jul. de 2019 · Wheatley’s stance on the first professional English actress is interesting, in his 1892 edition of Pepys Diary, the editor notes that “the first professional English actress was Mrs. Coleman, who acted Ianthe in Davenant’s “Siege of Rhodes,” at Rutland House in 1656,” however he does also state that Margaret Hughes was the first actress after the Restoration.

Margaret Hughes (c. 1630 – 1 October 1719), also Peg Hughes or Margaret Hewes, is often credited as the first professional actress on the English stage.[1] Hughes was also famous as the mistress of the English Civil War general and later Restoration admiral, Prince Rupert of the Rhine.
