On the one hand, Geulincx is considered a follower of Descartes because he was one of the first occasionalists while, on the other hand, his occasionalism turns out to be at odds with Descartes’ own philosophy. In this paper, I would like to approach Geulincx’s relationship with Descartes starting from ethics rather than from metaphysics.

Arnold Geulincx, né le 31 janvier 1624 à Anvers et mort de la peste en novembre 1669 à Leyde, âgé de 45 ans, est un philosophe belge. Biographie [ modifier | modifier le code ] Arnold Geulincx fut étudiant en philosophie, puis en théologie, à l' ancienne université de Louvain , dont il fut licencié en arts en 1643.
Christoph Lüthy, Neue Zürcher Zeitung "Geulincx's Ethics (1675) occupies an ambivalent stage between the mechanistic drift of Descartes' mind/body dualism and Spinoza's atheism. Its reputation during the 20th century has been largely attributable to Samuel Beckett's fascination with it and the radical Cartesian "Occasionalists" generally.
