  4. What follows does not pretend to be more than a partial exploration of these themes in some of Wollstonecraft’s writings. Beginning with a survey of her pronouncements on inequality (Section 1.1), it traces the course of Wollstonecraft’s thoughts on love and respect, shaped as they were by Edmund Burke’s observations on these subjects (Section 1.2).

  5. Quondam Fellow Sylvana Tomaselli became a Quondam Fellow in 2005. She was a Fellow of Hughes Hall from 1997 to 2002, during which she was Director of Studies in Social and Political Sciences (1999-2002) as well as a Tutor (2001-2002).

  6. She is often remembered for writing the Vindication of the Rights of Woman, but it was not in fact her best book, says Cambridge intellectual historian Sylvana Tomaselli. Here, she recommends books to read to get a good understanding of the extraordinary Mary Wollstonecraft, and the writers she was both influenced by and reacting against.

However, as Sylvana Tomaselli shows, a full understanding of Wollstonecraft’s thought is possible only through a more comprehensive appreciation of Wollstonecraft herself, as a philosopher and moralist who deftly tackled major social and political issues and the arguments of such figures as Edmund Burke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Adam Smith.
