He attended the Preußische Hauptkadettenanstalt, the training academy for officers in the Prussian Army, as a contemporary of Franz von Papen at the institution and was commissioned as an officer in 1899. Pabst saw active service in the First World War, mainly on the Western Front in Belgium and most notably at the Battle of Verdun.

His four years there were followed by three years of training at the Preußische Hauptkadettenanstalt in Lichterfelde. He was trained as a Herrenreiter ("gentleman rider"). He served for a period as a military attendant in the Kaiser's Palace and as a second lieutenant in his father's old unit, the Westphalian Uhlan Regiment No. 5 in Düsseldorf.

Dzimis prūšu virsnieka ģimenē. Jau kopš bērnības tika izglītots militārā garā. Mācījās Prūsijas galvenajā kadetu skolā Berlīnē (Königlich Preußische Hauptkadettenanstalt). 1900. gadā leitnanta pakāpē uzsāka militārā dienesta gaitas armijā. 1909. gadā turpināja militāro izglītību Prūsijas kara akadēmijā (Preußische Kriegsakademie).
