"Chucho's Steps" is built as a 50-measure head with no bridge, and also manages to modulate through multiple keys in a seamless and fluid way. This recording marks Valdés' new venture into a more Blakey-inspired role with his newly formed Afro-Cuban Messengers ensemble, a smaller group of much younger musicians, many of whom grew up listening to and learning from Irakere.

After leaving Irakere, Mr. Valdés won Grammys for Juntos Para Siempre (Calle 54, 2007), the duet recording with his father, Bebo; and, Chucho’s Steps (Comanche, 2010), which introduced his new group, the Afro-Cuban Messengers. But that didn´t mean to forget past achievements.

Since the ’80s, Valdes has released a steady flow of albums including 1986’s Lucumi (Messidor), 1998’s Bele Bele en la Habana (Blue Note), 2000’s Live at the Village Vanguard (Blue Note), 2002’s Fantasia Cubana: Variations on Classical Themes (Blue Note) and 2010’s Chucho’s Steps. ~ Matt Collar.
In this sense "Chucho's Steps" is in part a change of approach, if you will, but linked to all his previous work, always consistent and reaching larger dimension.<br /> If you exclude his formative years with Cuban big bands, his real major, not only piano but mainly as a composer and arranger, takes off with his dedication to Irakere for twenty years.
