She was the only child of Marjorie Merriweather Post (mother) and Edward Francis Hutton (father). Merrill's mother was a businesswoman, socialite, philanthropist, and the owner of General Foods and Mar-a-Lago, in Palm Beach, Florida.
She was the only child of Post Cereals heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and her second husband Edward Francis Hutton, founder of E. F. Hutton & Co. Merrill had two older half-sisters name Adelaide Brevoort Close and Eleanor Post Hutton, by her mother’s first marriage to Edward Bennett Close, grandfather of actress Glenn Close.
