Richard Strauss was also one of the influential musicians of his time as a conductor. He conducted numerous concerts with the Berliner Philharmoniker between 1888 and 1939. Strauss’s career as an opera composer began with a scandal: the Viennese premiere of his Salome was banned because of the “perverse sensuality” of the material.

Symphonia domestica (published in 1904 as SYMPHONIA DOMESTICA and in 1926 as Symphonia domestica ), Op. 53, is a tone poem for large orchestra by Richard Strauss reflecting the secure domestic life valued by the composer and accordingly dedicated by him to his "dear wife and young ones."
Richard Strauss’ Vater, Franz Joseph Strauss (1822-1905), hat sich durch sein musikalisches Talent aus elenden Verhältnissen emporgearbeitet. Seit 1847 Mitglied des Münchner Hofopernorchesters, gilt er als einer der besten Waldhornisten seiner Zeit. 1863 heiratet er Josepha Pschorr (1838-1910) aus der wohlhabenden Münchener Bierbrauerfamilie Pschorr.
