Godwin was a powerful Anglo-Saxon who was made Earl of Wessex in 1018 by King Cnut. Until his death in 1053 he built up the House of Godwin to become a powerful family. His power in England rivalled even that of Edward the Confessor .

14 de ene. de 2019 · Harold Godwinson's star rose even higher when he was crowned king on 6 January 1066 CE following the death the day before of his brother-in-law King Edward the Confessor, who died childless. Harold had acquired the crown in unclear circumstances, although Edward, on his deathbed, had personally nominated Harold as his successor and, in truth, there were not many other viable candidates.

Harold Godwinson knew that he didn’t have the manpower to defend Caldbec Hill and so at first light he moved his men to Senlac Hill where they formed a shield wall and waited for the Normans. William arrived and set up his forces at the bottom of the hill.

Leofwine Godwinson (1035 – 1066)was a younger brother of Harold II of England, the fifth son of Godwin. When the Godwin family was exiled from England in 1051 he went with Harold to Ireland. After the death of his father in 1053 he was made earl of Kent. He was killed alongside Harold and Gyrth in the Battle of Hastings.
