17 de may. de 2020 · In 1802, allegations of Jefferson’s sexual relationship with Hemings surfaced, resulting in an explosion of political satire in the press. Genetic analysis has determined that Hemings’s six children likely were fathered by Jefferson. Her four surviving children—Beverly, Harriet, Madison, and Eston Hemings—were freed in the 1820s.

Sally Hemings returned with Jefferson and his daughters to Monticello in 1789. There she performed the duties of an enslaved household servant and lady’s maid (Jefferson still referred to her as “Maria’s maid” in 1799). Sometime after 1800, Sally Hemings likely lived in one of the rooms of Monticello's South Wing.
3 de abr. de 2023 · The older two Hemings children, Beverly and Harriet, both left Monticello in 1822 when Beverly was twenty-four and Harriet was twenty-one. Beverly “ran away” from the estate but was not pursued, and Harriet left in a stagecoach headed North after longtime overseer of the Monticello estate gave her $50, presumably under instruction by Jefferson.
John's father, Eston Hemings, was born a slave at Monticello in 1808, the youngest of Sally Hemings' six mixed-race children. They are widely understood to have been the children of President Thomas Jefferson, Hemings' master. As they were seven-eighths European in ancestry, under Virginian law at the time they were legally white.
