Valentine Dyall, actor of stage and screen ,and a notable broadcaster, died on June 24 aged 77. His distinctive voice became known to a wide audience when in the popular radio series, Appointment with Fear, he opened in a deep, deliberate boom with the words: "This is your story-teller - The Man in Black." This was only one incident in his career.
Valentine Dyall Frank Poole Dyall (3 February 1870 [n 1] – 8 May 1950), professionally known as Franklin Dyall , was an English actor. In his early years he was a member of the companies of the actor-managers George Alexander , Ben Greet , John Martin-Harvey and Johnston Forbes-Robertson .
Narrator: Valentine Dyall . Appointment With Fear was the British version of Suspense, complete with the same music theme. The host, however, was British actor Valentine Dyall. Other than the different host (referred to as the Man in Black) the series was the same as the American original. Appointment With Fear ran for a total of ten series.

Valentine Dyall (7 May 1908 – 24 June 1985) was an English actor. His career spanned from the 1940s to the 1980s, and his roles ranged from films as iconic as Laurence Olivier's Henry V (1944), to cult TV shows such as the Black Guardian in Doctor Who, to numerous voice acting roles including "The Man in Black" on the long-running BBC Radio show Appointment with Fear.
