Franz is de zoon van Franz Theodor Schubert en Maria Elisabeth Vietz. Hij heeft drie oudere broers, Ignaz, Ferdinand en Carl, en een jonger zusje, Maria Theresia. Franz Theodor is schoolmeester. − Vanaf 1805 krijgt Franz vioolles van zijn vader en pianoles van Ignaz. Ook zingt hij in het koor van de parochiekerk in Lichtental.
