John Pym was born in 1584 near Bridgwater in Somerset, and matriculated from Broadgates Hall in Oxford in 1599. In 1602 he was a student at the Middle Temple, the conventional finishing-school for the late-Elizabethan gentleman, though he never practised at the bar.
