The story of Sir Edward Coke, the subject of my recent book, demonstrates that the development of the rule of law in England had unexpected causes. Coke was an influential English lawyer, judge and parliamentarian, gifted with a profound legal intellect and deeply held principles.
Sir Edward Coke (1552-1634), was the author of the Institutes of the Lawes of England (1628-44). Coke had a distinguished career as a barrister. In this capacity, he successively served as Solicitor General, Speaker of the House of Commons, Attorney General, Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, and Chief Justice of the Kings Bench.

In 1600, afraid that unauthorized versions of his case reports might be printed—and probably following the example of Edmund Plowden, with whom he had worked and whom he revered—Coke issued the First Part of his Reports.
Descripción: Resulta llamativo que un pensador político de la trascendencia de sir Edward Coke (1552-1634) apenas haya sido objeto de monografías o de estudios sistemáticos en lengua española. No hay que olvidar que Coke se encuentra entre los poquísimos autores que merecieron ser citados por Thomas Hobbes en su célebre Leviathan.
