Dean Acheson. Dean Acheson (1893-1971) was the United States Secretary of State under Harry S. Truman, between 1949 and 1953. Acheson was born in Middletown, Connecticut, the son of a Protestant bishop. Acheson was educated at the Groton School before studying at Yale and graduating in 1915.
