Shortly after Alastair was born, World War I broke out, prompting strong anti-German feelings in the United Kingdom. By 1917 King George V responded by changing the name of the Royal House from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to the House of Windsor and relinquishing all Germanic titles belonging to royals who were British citizens.

Alastair Arthur Windsor, 2nd Duke of Connaught and Strathearn (9 August 1914 – 26 April 1943), was a member of the British Royal Family. He was the only child of Prince Arthur of Connaught and Princess Alexandra, 2nd Duchess of Fife. He was a great-grandson of Queen Victoria through his father and also her great-great-grandson through his mother.

They weren't very close and in 1918, George V had stripped Alastair of all his titles due to the changing of the Royal house to Windsor which meant in practice Alastair only had honors of a Duke and Lord of the UK.
