American heiress, the only daughter of Cornelius "Neily" Vanderbilt III (1873–1942) and his wife Grace Graham Wilson Vanderbilt (1870-1953). Her only sibling, older brother Cornelius Vanderbilt IV (1898–1974), married seven times throughout his lifetime, but had no children. Grace Vanderbilt married Henry Gassaway Davis (1902–1984) in 1927.
Alice Claypoole Gwynne was born on November 11, 1845, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Alice, who was also raised in Cincinnati, was a daughter of lawyer Abraham Evan Gwynne and his wife, Rachel Moore Flagg.
