16 de abr. de 2016 · William Marshal (also called William the Marshal), 1st Earl of Pembroke, is one of the most important figures in the history of medieval England. He was a knight and nobleman who lived between the 12th and 13th centuries AD, during which he served five English monarchs – Henry the Young King, Henry II, Richard I, John, and Henry III.
WILLIAM MARSHAL (II) (died 1231) The first of the five sons of William Marshal (I) who in turn became earls of Pembroke. In 1220 his domain in Dyfed was attacked by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth who had complained of the inroads made by the earl's tenants on the Welsh in spite of the truce. On appeal to the king a settlement was concluded.

1 de may. de 2019 · William Marshal had a number of lucky breaks, to be sure, and there were periods when he fell from favour, particularly under the notoriously fickle “Bad” King John. Marshal certainly must have been a smart operator to negotiate the tricky politics of the medieval court, but his loyalty to the kings he swore allegiance to gave him a reputation for steadfastness which helped make his fortune.
The History of William Marshal is the earliest surviving biography of a medieval knight - indeed it is the first biography of a layman in the vernacular in European history. Composed in verse in the 1220s just a few years after his death, it is a major primary source not simply for its subject's life but for the exceptionally stormy period he had had to navigate.
