Friederike Charlotte of Hesse-Darmstadt was born on September 8 1698, in Darmstadt, to Ernest Louis, Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt and Margravine Dorothea Charlotte of Brandenburg-Ansbach. Friederike married Maximilian of Hesse-Kassel on November 28 1720, at age 22 in Darmstadt.
In order to provide his children with a replacement mother figure Friederike’s father decided to remarry. His choice of wife was his late wife’s sister and his children’s favourite aunt, Princess Charlotte of Hesse-Darmstadt. Friederike and her siblings were all in Darmstadt to attend the ceremony which was held on 28 September 1784.

She was the eldest surviving daughter and fourth child of Frederick William III, King of Prussia, and Duchess Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, and a sister of Frederick William IV and of William I, German Emperor.
