He is best known for his calm river and estuary scenes, often with vast skies. In 1623 he enrolled as a master painter in Haarlem, where he spent his entire career.

Originally named de Goyer, as was his brother Isaack (also a painter and the father of Jacob van Ruisdael), Salomon entered the Haarlem Guild of St Luke in 1628.
