Roger Palmer, 1st Earl of Castlemaine; Credit – Wikipedia Barbara was considered one of the most beautiful of the young Royalist women but her lack of a dowry did not help her marriage prospects. On April 14, 1659, Barbara married the Roman Catholic Roger Palmer (1634 – 1705), later 1st Earl of Castlemaine, against his family’s wishes.
Roger Palmer, Earl of Castlemaine (1634-1705), diplomat and author, was the eldest son of Sir James Palmer of Hayes, Middlesex, and Dorney Court, Buckinghamshire, by his second wife, Catherine, daughter of Sir William Herbert, K.B. Palmer was born at Dorney Court on 3 September 1634, and educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge, which he entered on 25 March 1652.
The daughter of the Royalist William Villiers, 2nd Viscount Grandison (1614–43), she married Roger Palmer (1634–1705) in 1659; she was granted the title of Countess of Castlemaine in 1661 (entailing the ennoblement of her cuckolded husband Roger Palmer as Earl of Castlemaine) and was elevated to Duchess of Cleveland in her own right in 1670.
PALMER, ROGER, Earl of Castlemaine (1634–1705), diplomatist and author, was eldest son of Sir James Palmer [q. v.] of Hayes, Middlesex, and Dorney Court, Buckinghamshire, by his second wife, Catherine, daughter of Sir William Herbert, K.B., created Lord Powis in 1674, and relict of Sir Robert Vaughan of Llydiarth, Montgomeryshire.
