Tanger is een van de oudste steden van Marokko (alleen Larache is nog ouder). De stad is waarschijnlijk in de 6e eeuw v.Chr. door Feniciërs gesticht onder de naam Tingis, waarna het drie eeuwen gedomineerd werd door de Puniërs. Volgens de Berberse mythologie is de stad door de held Sufax gebouwd.
