Nuevo Leinster era una provincia de la Colonia de Nueva Zelanda, formada por la isla Stewart/Rakiura y llamada así por la provincia irlandesa de Leinster. El gobernador William Hobson renombró la Isla Norte como Nuevo Úlster , la Isla Sur como Nuevo Munster y la Isla Stewart /Rakiura como Nuevo Leinster en 1840 en honor a las regiones correspondientes en Irlanda. It is currently contested by LFA affiliated League of Ireland clubs, Leinster Senior League Senior Division clubs and invited teams from the various LFA affiliated junior leagues.
The paper was founded 1880 in Naas, County Kildare, as the Leinster Leader and Central Counties Commercial and Agricultural Adviser by Patrick Cahill, LLB, who was its first editor in August 1880. Patrick Cahill was an Irish Nationalist, Land League Activist and supporter of Home Rule, he was jailed under the Coercion Act of 1881 .
