Eorlingas. Eorlingas was a name sometimes the Rohirrim used for themselves, as followers and descendants of their first King, Eorl . The word was used in a call to arms chanted by King Théoden when Gandalf had healed him: [1] " Arise now, arise, Riders of Théoden! Dire deeds awake, dark it is eastward. Etymology [edit | edit source] The name Éothéod is an Old English (Anglo-Saxon) name, which means "Horse-folk", "horse-people" or "Horse-land".
In Eorlingas the meaning also seems to be 'sons' (the modern English 'Sons of Eorl' is also used) but here the meaning is more figurative, referring to all the Rohirrim as 'sons' of Eorl the 'father' of their country.
