Whigs et tories. Les noms «Whigs» et «Tories» ont été appliqués à partir du milieu du dix-septième siècle à des groupements politiques au Parlement qui étaient unis par des combinaisons changeantes de favoritisme, de loyauté personnelle, d'intérêts spéciaux et de principes politiques; ce n'étaient pas des partis politiques organisés au sens moderne du terme.
WHIG AND TORY (Whig, probably abbreviated from whiggamore, a nickname for the Presbyterian peasantry of the western lowlands of Scotland, from whiggam, apparently a word to urge on a horse, from whig, to jog along; Tory, from Ir. toridhe, tornidhe, tornighe, pursuer, plunderer, from torighim, to fancy, pursue).
A tory név egyet jelentett a konzervatív, a whig a liberális szavakkal. A legszélső torykat, akik minden újítást a legmakacsabbul elleneztek, magas-toryknak (hightories) nevezték.
