In my Master’s recital, a musician showed late and an instrument I built broke, and I had trouble facing the—very supportive—audience.

Mahler Foundation and sponsored by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, realized a very special work by Georg Friedrich Haas: In 11.000 Saiten, 50 pianos that have been microtonally tuned against one another play together with a chamber orchestra.

Georg Friedrich Haas (*1953 in Graz) studierte Komposition bei Iván Eröd und Gösta Neuwirth in Graz und bei Friedrich Cerha in Wien. Bevor er als MacDowell Professor of Music an die Columbia University in New York berufen wurde, lehrte er als außerordentlicher Universitätsprofessor in Graz und war Professor für Komposition an der Musik-Akademie in Basel.

Haas meint vor allem auch seinen Vater, der die Politiker der Zweiten Republik als Kollaborateure "mit den sogenannten Siegermächten ansah" und sich aktiv in widersprüchliche private Situationen begab. 1976, als ein Stück von Georg Friedrich Haas beim Steirischen Herbst erklang, beteiligte sich "Vati" an einer rechtsradikalen Initiative, die das Festival abschaffen wollte.
