Leonhard Euler, (born April 15, 1707, Basel, Switz.—died Sept. 18, 1783, St. Petersburg, Russia), Swiss mathematician. In 1733 he succeeded Daniel Bernoulli ( see Bernoulli family) at the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. There he developed the theory of trigonometric and logarithmic functions and advanced mathematics generally.
