The most avant-garde thing I keep in rotation is Tom Waits. Depending on your level of enjoyment of experimental music, he might be rather normal or way out there. Personally, I love experimentation in terms of sonic choices, arrangements, sloppy/rough production, long/short songs, etc. but I always have one primary rule: it must benefit the song.
