Her parents were Charles William Ferdinand, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel and Princess Augusta, elder sister of King George III of the United Kingdom. Caroline was not well-educated although she could understand French and English.

Princess Caroline of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel is an 1804 portrait painting by the English artist Thomas Lawrence portraying Caroline of Brunswick, the estranged wife of George, Princes of Wales. [1] [2] Lawrence, the top portrait painter of the era, had previously created a dual portrait of Caroline and her daughter Princess Charlotte in 1801.

Her tomb, in Brunswick, bears the inscription ‘Caroline of Brunswick, the Injured Queen of England.’ In Dover, Caroline Place was named after her, which was roughly where Stembrook car park is today.
Caroline's marriage to her cousin George, prince of Wales, in March 1795 was a spectacular disaster. Intimacy was confined to the first night, and the couple separated after the birth of their daughter Princess Charlotte in January 1796. Thereafter, Caroline spent much time on the continent with a strange entourage, which led to much gossip.
