Gertrude Stein je umrla od raka debelog creva u Neuilly-sur-Seine, 27. jula, 1946. Sahranjena je na čuvenom groblju Père Lachaise. Alice je nasledila veći deo njene imovine. Kao egzekutor njenog književnog opusa Stein je imenovala fotografa i pisca Carl van Vechtena, koji je objavio njene, do smrti neobjavljene, radove.
