Hace 3 días · Medgar Wiley Evers was born in 1925 in Decatur, Mississippi, to James and Jessie Evers. During his childhood in Decatur, Evers encountered overt racism on a daily basis. When he was twelve years old, a family friend was lynched, and the man’s bloody clothing hung on a fence for more than a year as a sign of intimidation.
Medgar and Myrlie Evers house will be open for public viewing June 9-12th from 10am to 6pm. All tours will start at Myrlie's Garden on Missouri Street, a short walk from the house.Those visitors who are on the shuttle tour will be dropped off at Myrlie's Garden, and picked up after the house tour.
The NAACP posthumously awarded Evers the Spingarn Medal, the organization’s highest honor. The City University of New York named their new Brooklyn campus Medgar Evers College in 1970. Myrlie Evers-Williams, Medgar’s wife, continued the struggle for equality and became the first chairwoman of the NAACP in 1995.
