Nello stesso anno gli fu concesso il titolo di principe. Dopo il ritorno di Napoleone dall'Elba, comandò l'armata prussiana in Belgio; battuto da Napoleone a Ligny (16 giugno 1815), riuscì però ad evitare di essere separato dagli Inglesi, sicché poté giungere di sorpresa sul campo di Waterloo e contribuire notevolmente alla vittoria.
