The Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was set up in 1701. The capital was Neustrelitz. In 1808, the duchy joined the Confederation of the Rhine. The Congress of Vienna made it a grand duchy and member of the German Confederation. Mecklenburg-Strelitz joined the North German Confederation in 1867, and became a part of the German Empire in 1871.

Both parties continued to call themselves Dukes of Mecklenburg; Adolphus Frederick took his residence at Strelitz. The Strelitz duchy remained one of the most backward regions of the Empire. Wir bei den Strelitz Dukes spielen 5er Flag. Das heisst, dass das Spielfeld nur ungefähr halb so groß ist, wie beim richtigen American Football und sich nicht 11 sondern nur 5 Spieler gegenüber stehen. Außerdem sind beim Flag Football auch gemischte Teams, also geschlechterunabhängig, erlaubt. Eine Sektion des Strelitzer FC e.V.
