El Praemium Imperiale se otorga en memoria de Su Alteza Imperial el príncipe Takamatsu (1905–1987), hermano menor del emperador Shōwa (Hirohito) que reinó desde 1926 hasta 1989. El príncipe Takamatsu fue famoso por su largo apoyo al desarrollo, promoción y progreso de las artes en el mundo.
The prize consists of a gold medal and 15 million Japanese yen, and was created by the Fujisankei Communications Group, which pays the expenses of around $3 million per year. Six nomination committees, each chaired by an International Advisor, propose candidates in five fields: Painting, Sculpture, Architecture, Music and Theatre/Film.
