Fitz-George was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 12 August, 1866. [1] Fitz-George was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 November, 1872. In September 1875 he was appointed in command of the sloop Rapid. He grounded her on 24 March, 1876 through a "want of care in approaching the land too close & not having properly used the lead."
