She sat out the 60s in Australia, then returned home to tend to her ailing mother.

Helen Humes a appris le piano, l'orgue et le chant au sein de son église. À ses quatorze ans, en 1927, elle est repérée par le guitariste de blues Sylvester Weaver, qui l'emmène à Saint-Louis dans le Missouri pour des sessions d'enregistrement ; elle grave une dizaine de morceaux dont certains avec le bluesman Lonnie Johnson [1], [2].
Helen Humes bekam ihr Talent schon von ihren Eltern, die häufig im Duett in ihrer Kirchengemeinde sangen, in die Wiege gelegt. 1927 bereits begleitete sie Sylvester Weaver bei einigen seiner letzten Aufnahmen. 1937 zog sie nach Albany und wurde Sängerin bei der Big Band von Harry James.
