Until 1562 he was known as Lord James, and his title was Lord of Abernethy.

When James Stewart 1st Earl of Moray was born on 22 May 1531, in Edinburgh, Scotland, his father, James V King of Scotland, was 19 and his mother, Lady Margaret Erskine, was 15. He married Lady Agnes Keith on 8 February 1562, in Holyrood, Midlothian, Scotland. They were the parents of at least 1 daughter.
So on 11 August 1607, just after he came of age, he received from Parliament the ratification needed to bolster his entitlements to those family charters, especially those given to his grandfather James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray, and to ensure the inheritance of these titles by his own descendants. 17 de may. de 2018 · Moray, James Stewart, 1st earl of [S] (1531–70). Illegitimate son of James V and thus half-brother of Mary Stuart. As Lord James Stewart, he played a key role in the protestant rebellion of 1559–60, subsequently dominating the provisional government which negotiated Mary's peaceful return to Scotland in 1561.
