Fact file. Born Lectoure (Gers), 10 April, 1769, died Eberdorff (Austria), 31 May 1809. A mere volunteer who became a soldier of extraordinary bravery and sang-froid, literally covered in scars, Lannes was a key figure in Napoleon’s military success. Very much down-to-earth (in Italy when offered the Pope’s hand to kiss, he firmly shook it).
Jean Lannes, bound out as an apprentice dyer, ran away to join the army of the Revolution. Always eager for action and leading from the front, he was much wounded and much promoted. Napoleon revered him. “How dare you draw swords!” cried Lannes instantly. “Sheath them at once!”.
Jean Lannes voit le jour le 10 avril 1769 à Lectoure Maison natale du maréchal Lannes à Lectoure, paisible bourgade de Lomagne sise entre Agen et Auch, sur le Gers, où son père est cultivateur et marchand de biens. Ouvrier teinturier lorsqu'éclate la Révolution, il s'engage en 1792 dans le 2ème bataillon de volontaires du Gers.
Il s'embarque pour l'Egypte avec son chef en mai 1798 et, après avoir été blessé à Saint-Jean-d'Acre et s'être illustré à Aboukir le 25 juillet 1799, il raccompagne Bonaparte en France. Pendant la Campagne d'Italie en 1800 , il dirige l'avant-garde, le 9 juin, après avoir tenu tête à toute l'armée autrichienne pendant une journée, il remporte la bataille de Montebello.

He is promoted to marshal on May 19, 1804. He is in command of the 5th corps during the 1805 Austrian campaign, and of the left wing at Austerlitz, on December 2nd. He takes part in the 1806 Prussian campaign and defeats Prince Ludwig of Prussia at Saalfeld. He is also at Jena (October 14, 1806), in command of the center of the Grande Armée.
Jean E. Lannes (born 21 September 1947 in Pauligne) is a French mathematician, specializing in algebraic topology and homotopy theory. Lannes completed his secondary studies at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris and graduated in 1966 from the École Normale Supérieure .
