Lewis Milestone nació en Besarabia, Imperio Ruso,(actual Ucrania), el 30 de septiembre de 1895. En su temprana adolescencia se trasladó a los Estados Unidos. Su primer contacto con la narración cinematográfica se produjo en tiempos de la Primera Guerra Mundial, época en la cual ayudaba a rodar los entrenamientos de las tropas americanas.
