Travelled through Spain and Italy after graduating. Met Elizabeth Vassall, wife of Sir Godfrey Webster in Naples, and married on 6 July 1795. Changed his name to Vassal in 1800 to strengthen the claim his children had on the fortune Webster had won in the divorce.
