Balthasar Gerards, eigenlijk Balthasar Gérard, werd geboren in Vuillafans bij Besançon in het Vrijgraafschap Bourgondië (tegenwoordig Franche-Comté ); als zodanig was hij een onderdaan van het Spaanse Rijk van de net aangetreden Filips II van Spanje.
