The most well-known of them was Ernst Thälmann. His rise from casual labourer to prominent politician of the Weimar Republic began after World War I.
Ernst Thälmann (1886–1944) joined the Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany [Unabhängige Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands or USPD] in 1917. Later he was part of the exodus of members who, in 1920, split from the USPD and attached themselves to the KPD.
Der 1986 eingeweihte Ernst-Thälmann-Park ist ein Höhepunkt des sozialistischen Städtebaus in der späten DDR. Seit 2014 unter Denkmalschutz gestellt, zieht er heute wieder vermehrt Interesse auf sich. Die Ausstellung zeigt auf Bannern, ergänzt durch Originale, die vielschichtige Entstehungsgeschichte des Ensembles.
