Rhys ap Tewdwr (d. 1093), king of Deheubarth ( c. 1078–93), known later as Rhys the Great. A descendant of Hywel Dda, he came to power in 1075, though only at the battle of Mynydd Carn (1081), and with Gruffydd ap Cynan's aid, did he defeat his rivals and relatives. By then the Norman advances in Wales had begun.
Brief Life History of Rhys. Rhys ap Tewdwr Prince of Deheubarth was born in 1051, in Llandyfeisant, Carmarthenshire, Wales as the son of Tewdwr Mawr ap Cadell and Gwenllian ferch Gwyn. He married Gwladys ferch Rhiwallon in 1075, in Wales. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 3 daughters.

He married Gwladus, daughter of Rhiwallon ap Cynfyn, and had issue Gruffydd, Hywel, and Nest. His immediate task was to hold at bay Caradoc, who had slain his two predecessors.
Rhys ap Tewdwr (before 1065 – 1093) was a king of Deheubarth in Wales and member of the Dinefwr dynasty, a branch descended from Rhodri the Great. Rhys's grandfather, Rhys ap Tewdwr, was king of Deheubarth, and was killed at Brecon in 1093 by Bernard de Neufmarché. Following his death, most of Deheubarth was taken over by the Normans . Rhys's father, Gruffydd ap Rhys , eventually was able to become ruler of a small portion, and more territory was won back by Rhys's older brothers after Gruffydd's death.

28 de dic. de 2020 · Rhys was again involved in civil strife in 1088, when Madog, Cadwgan, and Rhiryd, sons of Bleddyn ap Cynfyn, drove him into exile. Before the end of the year, however, he returned with Irish assistance, and defeated the three in the battle of ‘Pen Lethereu,’ in which Madog and Rhiryd fell.
