George Benjamin Luks was an American artist, identified with the aggressively realistic Ashcan School of American painting. After travelling and studying in Europe, Luks worked as a newspaper illustrator and cartoonist in Philadelphia, where he became part of a close-knit group, led by Robert Henri, that set out to defy the genteel values imposed by the influential National Academy of Design.
Seeking respite from urban hurly-burly during the 1920s, Luks purchased a farmhouse in Old Chatham, New York, a rural town about 130 miles north of Manhattan. During summers there, he made portraits of some of his neighbors, including the young man who posed for Boy with Baseball.
